THE REAL STRAND
It will take a miracle for me to accept
That all we float between us
Is a tiny globe, complete with mini-countries
Diminutive oceans, and fierce border disputes.
We share our responsibility like sharks share chum.
My hand, your ear, my nose, your gaze, my wish,
Your dream, my sight, your pain.
We don't do this well, this planet lording. Perhaps,
if we were beings in other skins,
we would find the little thread that really binds us
and realize how much blood it has soaked up.
I AM THE HEIGHT OF TIES
That photo, you know which one,
Me centered, clasped by your arm
June heat, but we all grin.
BERRIES AND CHEESE
Believe the farmer
Knock box, crate, carton
The vine morsels, pluckable to a fault
I never like seeds, you say
Our heavens pucker, angels frown
Offer keffir in a spoon with jewels atop.
You turn down immortality so well.
We've played it too many times
And never do it.
We've saved it too many times
And never woo it.
We'll be old and bent over canes
Before the essence of those sweet refrains
Dissolves in empty placemat stains.
And how, and how, and how...
